The following was inspired by this lovely photo from Laurie W. Smith who was kind enough to let me post it here 🙂
The bliss of fig
embraces, nutrients tap
from its host for its own good
◊
The curse of fig
nooses, chokes and wraps
killing the host where it stood
◊
The kiss of fig
seduces root and sap
trapping the ghost in wood

I loved this poem. It was like a sweet strangulation; endearing, and yet…
I’m so glad you enjoyed it. That photo spoke to me…beautiful yet deadly.
Oh, Melanie. That says so very, very much about everything. Life. The embrace, the death, the holding on. Killing the thing you need to live. This has so many angles, so much depth. So many good lessons to be learned from this. And the tree unable to save itself. The power-hungry, 1%, sucking the life out of our planet, killing it until all that will be left will be the ghosts of what once was and then, not even that will remain. And we refuse to save ourselves. So powerful…on so many levels. This is such an important poem. You said I could reblog your work so…
Thank you so much. Yes, I saw this on so many levels. I’m glad that came through to you. And yes, of course you are always welcome to reblog. 🙂
Reblogged this on Rethinking Life and commented:
Melanie wrote this important poem. To me, it speaks of many things, relationships and the world in which we currently live. The greedy and rich have attached themselves to the earth and are sucking the life out of it…soon all that will be left are the ghostly images of what once was, held in place by their desperate and still greedy claws. Thank you Melanie. So very much.
Thank you so much for sharing this with your readers. I’m glad it spoke to you as the picture spoke to me.
Beautiful verse and an AMAZING photo! 🙂
