Hi All! I know I have been horribly remiss in visiting and commenting. My internet connection is satellite and leaves a lot to be desired so it is challenging to get online (i’m sure you can see i rarely post anymore)
Anyway I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all who visit and all who comment. It has not gone unnoticed and I will try to come visit many of you soon 🙂
So a friend asked me today, completely put of the blue, “How tall was Annie Oakley?” Random question right but he totally thought i would know…I did not! BUT that caused me to look her up. So I thought I’d share a few tidbits… (links to original sources.)
Annie Oakley, original name Phoebe Ann Mosey, (born Aug. 13, 1860, Darke county, Ohio, U.S.—died Nov. 3, 1926, Greenville, Ohio), American markswoman who starred in Buffalo Bill’sWild West show, where she was often called “Little Sure Shot.”
Now this was what I found cool:
Throughout her career, it is believed that Oakley taught more than 15,000 women how to use a gun. Oakley believed strongly that it was crucial for women to learn how to use a gun, as not only a form of physical and mental exercise, but also to defend themselves.[8] She said:
“I would like to see every woman know how to handle guns as naturally as they know how to handle babies.”
Anyway if you want to know more…look her up AND if you were wondering…she was 5 ft tall!!
A week ago we were driving down the road in Missouri when we spotted something up ahead that was a bit alarming… a wee orange baby on the back bumper of a pickup truck going at least 65 miles an hour down the road. We sped up and changed lanes in hope of catching up to the truck, getting in front of it and getting it to stop, all the while keeping an eye on the wee one. But, before we could do that we watched in horror as it jumped off the bumper!
We then quickly changed lanes and backed up a bit and stopped to look for the poor thing. We were certain it was seriously injured…fearing a broken back or broken limbs… but when we found him on the side of the road he ran from us at first which was a good sign but we were afraid we would lose sight of him and he would either end up getting run over in traffic or left in the woods to starve or be eaten. But luckily for him and for us we were able to coax him over.
Miraculously he only had suffered minor injuries, he had a bloody eye and nose and had some road rash on his behind. We got him to the car and wrapped him in a towel and i held him for a very long car ride back to West Virginia.
He has promptly made himself at home and won our hearts.
I wanted to share one of my favorite Christmas songs with you. This is full of whimsy and magic 🙂 Take a listen!
And in case you would like to read the lyrics….
December Will Be Magic Again
Written by Kate Bush
December will be magic again. Take a husky to the ice While Bing Crosby sings White Christmas. He makes you feel nice. December will be magic again. Old Saint Nicholas up the chimney, Just a-popping up in my memory.
Ooh, dropping down in my parachute, The white city, she is so beautiful Upon the black-soot icicled roofs, Ooh, and see how I fall. See how I fall (“Fall!”) [backwards] Like the snow.
Come to cover the lovers. (Cover the lovers, But don’t you wake them up.) Come to sparkle the dark up. (Sparkle the dark up, With just a touch of make-up.) Come to cover the muck up. (Cover the muck up, Ooh, with a little luck.)
December will be magic again. Light the canDLe-lights To conjure Mr. Wilde Into the Silent Night. Ooh, it’s quiet inside, Here in Oscar’s mind.
December will be magic again. Don’t miss the brightest star. Kiss under mistletoe. I want to hear you laugh. Don’t let the mystery go now.
(Sparkle the dark up, With just a touch of make-up.) Come to cover the muck up (Cover the muck up, Ooh, with a little luck.)
Oh, I’m coming to cover the lovers. Ooh, and I’m coming to sparkle the dark up.
Soooo, I know I have been M.I.A. lately…and I am sure you are all missing me horribly…
no poetry, no comments…no visits to your lovely blogs. I’m terribly behind on emails too. I’m sorry, but I have to admit I’ve been a bit distracted.
You see…I’m getting married….
in 5 days!!!
Yes, 5 days!
After a very long engagement we have decided the time is now 🙂
Brian and I are making it official on Sept 17th and then taking a little road trip vacation/honeymoon.
{We will not be as cute as any of the above ↑ couples…
but i couldn’t resist snagging them from google images 🙂 }
So, my presence online will continue to be nonexistant or spotty at best until the end of the month. Please bear with me…I’ll be back in the swing soon. 🙂
Brian and I went to Haslam’s today 🙂 It is one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg.
Haslam’s Book Store 2025 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, Florida 33713
The place is huge. It is so cool to wander around and see the diverstiy…they have old, used books as well as all the current best sellers. They have some rare first editions and signed copies…some of these are kept in locked cases but many are one the shelves next to $2 books. You never know what you are going to stumble across.
You really cannot see the size and scope of the place through these pictures. But I will tell you they actually have little maps of the place so you can find your way around!
Oh and by the way, Jack Kerouac is rumored to still haunt the store. He supposedly still moves his books to more prominent display locations as he did in life. It is funny becaus everytime I go in I always spot new and different things…AND I always see a couple Kerouac!
Haslam’s was started in 1933 in the Depression by John and Mary Haslam, both avid readers, to provide other readers with used magazines and books at bargain prices.
Haslam’s celebrated 80 years this past December. Amazing, really when so many other book stores are closing…both indepedent and big box stores.
Today was fun AND I had to show remarkable restraint… oh I wish i was independently wealthy so i could take stacks of these home with me!!
